Friends of Heng Ram (FoHR) Fund B4B interest free loan fund

Intro:

FoHR is a special fund that will assist families who need a “hand-up” versus a “handout.” We have established a loan fund, the FoHr Fund, to provide financing for those that don’t qualify for regular B4B homes.  The fund will be targeted for individuals who can help B4B build capacity to support our operations in-country.

First Recipient

In 2019 we helped Heng Ram and his family to realize their dream of owning their own home.  Heng Ram has worked with B4B for many years, and he has proven to be a trusted, reliable, and exceptional worker.  He is also a great person with a big heart, and he understands what B4B is trying to do.  He has become a very important part of the B4B team.  B4B believes in building local capacity and not creating dependency on our support.

Heng and his wife, Pany, and three young children, Panya, Manich, and Thyda, were previously renting a small one-room apt in Siem Reap behind the small shop that Pany operated to sell food.  They saved enough money, bought land, and procured enough land-fill to raise their land above the flood plain.  It was their dream to have a house of their own.

While B4B wanted to help Heng with this dream, his family did not qualify under our normal criteria to help “…the poorest families in Cambodia.”  Therefore we established this special fund to help those who need a hand-up. Note that bank financing in Cambodia can be expensive and out of reach for many Cambodians.

Guidelines:

  1. A loan fund has been established in trust by B4B with initial capital of about $10k USD.

  2. Funds have been provided for FoHR from supporters who have made a personal connection with Heng and/or want to help him achieve his goals.

  3. FoHR's can make a charitable donation to B4B and receive a tax receipt either in Canada or the USA.

  4. New recipients can apply for a loan from this fund to finance the building of their new home.

  5. They will pay back the loan on an interest-free basis with the monthly payment to be roughly equivalent to there current monthly expenses.

  6. Loan payments will go back into the B4B FoHR fund and made available for the next FoHR candidate who needs a "hand-up.”

  7. Recipients will also contribute sweat equity toward the building of their home.

  8. Governance policies have been established by the B4B board.
